Slow Internet Fixes

There are a few things that can cause a slower than normal internet connection. Let’s take a look at some problems and ways to fix them.

Troubleshoot Your Hardware

The first basic stop is to give your modem and router a quick reset. That means to unplug the them for approximately 10-20 seconds and then plug them back in, and see if that helps. Check the other computers in your house to see if their internet is running slow also. If the problem only happens on one computer, the problem is that machine and not your router or modem.

Fix Your Wi-Fi Signal

If you’re using Wi-Fi, you might find that your router and internet are fine, but your wireless signal is weak, causing a slow connection. In that case, you may need to reposition, tweak and boost your router with a few simple tips.

  1. Get a modern router
  2. Don’t hide your router
  3. Buy a Wi-Fi extender
  4. Check for router updates
  5. Kick your neighbors offline
  6. Perform a speed test

Work Smart

If you need to get work done on your slow connection, you may have to prioritize task differently. Separate your tasks into bandwidth-heavy and bandwidth-light tasks. Get the light ones done when you’re on your slow connection, and group all the bandwidth-heavy tasks together so you can do them when you get faster access. You can also work outside your browser whenever possible.
