5 Do’s and Don’ts for the first day of college
August 14, 2018
Hang up those sandals and pack away the beach umbrella. Summer break has flown by and the new school year is upon us. The segue to new schedules, campus and being away from home can certainly present some challenges. Here is a list of tips from MaxxSouth Broadband that will help kick-start the school year in a positive and impactful way.
1. Do remember grades aren’t everything
You worked really hard to get to college. You took the SAT, you beefed up your extracurricular activities and you watched your GPA like a hawk. The truth is, top grades don’t always matter. Grades reflect your focus but not intelligence or ability. Learning to maximize your innate ability is far more beneficial to you. Use your college years to gain marketable skills you don’t have yet. Seek experiences outside your comfort zone that will help you stand out when you apply for jobs, internships or graduate school. Remember grades aren’t the Holy Grail of school—learning is.
2. Don’t forget to use your student discount everywhere
Your student identification lands you discounts on practically everything you use. Never pay retail again when you flash your student ID. From airline tickets to restaurants to phone plans; you can save money everywhere. You can even sign up for an international student ID card for access to discounts abroad.
3. Do call your mother
Being separated from familiar surroundings is disconcerting, which is why scheduling frequent contact with loved ones helps. In a campus full of strangers, it’s nice to have support just a connection away. Besides, research shows that contacting parents on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays reduces dangerous drinking behaviors.
4. Don’t schedule your classes based on RateMyProfessor.com
The popular rating guide of professors has useful information such as expected workload. Do note that you are doing yourself a disservice. A professor’s teaching ability will differ just as students have varying scholastic needs. Meager comments like “it’s hard” or “very easy class” are opinions, not facts. Speaking directly to the professor and understanding how the class is structured is better than opinions on a website.
5. Do get internet the same day you order it
The internet for students is an exponential great idea. With one click of the mouse, you can access course work, make phone calls or play “World of Warcraft.” You have things to do online. Why wait for a provider to say “they’re coming soon” when you can order and get internet the same day?
When you sign up for MaxxSpeed Internet and High Definition TV, MaxxSouth Broadband will activate it the same day. The “Call today! Get activated today!” MaxxGuarantee* eliminates wait time.
